ATTUD statement in response to “A prospective cohort study challenging the effectiveness of population-based medical intervention for smoking cessation” (Alpert HR, Connolly GN, Biener L; Tobacco Control; January 10, 2012) arguing against the conclusion that nicotine replacement therapies are not effective, which can potentially discourage smokers from accessing the most commonly used scientifically-proven treatment option.

Cochrane has produced systematic reviews of primary research in tobacco cessation and is a source for evidence-based information about cessation support (behavioral, pharmacological), environmental tobacco smoke and policies

 

The National Cancer Institute lists information about specific cancers as well as research about cancer and prevention and research funding opportunities.

 

Monitoring the Future is a nation-wide survey of adolescent students measuring tobacco, drug and alcohol use. Funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, this survey offers up-to-date statistics about youth and tobacco use.

 

PubMed.gov is a free searchable database of research articles. Many articles can be downloaded without a journal subscription.

 

The Social Climate of Tobacco Control survey measures policy changes, changes in social norms, reductions in exposure of individuals to environmental tobacco smoke, and rejection of pro-tobacco influences. Articles and posters based upon the results are available on the website.

 

The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco is a professional organization supporting researchers, treatment professionals, academics and others working in the field of nicotine and tobacco research. It sponsors a yearly conference highlighting new research in the field and publishes a journal, “Nicotine and Tobacco Research,” and hosts a listserv and resource page.

 

The Surgeon General’s website includes the most recent Surgeon General report (“Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update”), the report on “Reflecting on 50 Years of Progress” as well as past reports and a video and podcast series. Fact sheets are available which address smoking risks for particular populations

 

Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: 2008 Update, sponsored by the Public Health Service, is a comprehensive resource for cessation professionals available for download in English and Spanish. The report includes information about evidence-based clinical treatments for tobacco dependence. A slide set and education sheets for consumers are also available.

 

TreaTobacco.net presents evidence-based information about the treatment of tobacco dependence. Specific headings for research archives include demographic and health effects, efficacy of treatments, health economics, policy, safety and electronic cigarettes.
